Food\u2019s focus has left what tastes good, and has arrived at what ingredients are on the plate. This change in focus has hit the fast food industry\u00a0<em>especially<\/em>\u00a0hard, considering fast food is more easily made with a fryer and carbs. However, drive thrus featuring lower-fat alternatives and better ingredients are receiving\u00a0<strong>positive<\/strong>\u00a0feedback and\u00a0<strong>profit<\/strong> gain for their efforts.<\/p>\n<p>As the demand for\u00a0<strong>calorie<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>counts<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>fresh<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>ingredients<\/strong>\u00a0only continues to rise, QSRs\u2019 traditional method of fast-frying their food continually becomes a target for criticism. These shifts in thinking are most likely\u00a0<strong>permanent,<\/strong>\u00a0too.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qsrmagazine.com\/nutrition\/what-healthy-really-means\">Analyst Bonnie Riggs<\/a>\u00a0of The NPD Group confirms \u201cwe are\u00a0<strong>definitely<\/strong>\u00a0seeing a health movement, not a fad,\u201d from consumers. Her data revealed that consumers voted \u201c<strong>healthy<\/strong>\u00a0as the No. 1 characteristic they want to see more of on restaurant menus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/ingredientspackaginglabeling\/labelingnutrition\/ucm248732.htm\">FDA set a frightening compliance date of May 5, 2017<\/a>\u00a0for chains of 20 stores or more to display nutritional information. It has since been\u00a0<em>stretched<\/em>\u00a0to next year, but quick-serve restaurants are scrambling to 1) gather their\u00a0<strong>own<\/strong>\u00a0nutritional information and 2) figure out how to\u00a0<strong>improve<\/strong>\u00a0their calorie counts as to not scare customers away.<\/p>\n<p>There is\u00a0<strong>no<\/strong>\u00a0doubt that switching to cleaner, better alternatives in the drive thru is a challenge. But those that\u00a0<strong>have\u00a0<\/strong>done it are yielding encouraging results. Carl\u2019s Jr.\u2019s \u201cAll-Natural Burger\u201d had claims of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.takepart.com\/article\/2015\/03\/15\/consumers-find-carls-jr-all-natural-burger-distasteful\">exceeding sales forecasts\u00a0<\/a>every week upon its release; McDonald\u2019s implementation of its \u201cEgg White Delight\u201d and \u201cBreakfast Bowls\u201d are seeing success, too. Even vegetarian and vegan options, like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amysdrivethru.com\/\">Amy&#8217;s Drive Thru<\/a>\u00a0for example, are picking up high speed, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ezcater.com\/company\/blog\/how-to-fit-the-plant-kingdom-into-a-burger-10-fast-food-trends\/\">ezCater<\/a>. Utilizing buzzwords like \u201call-natural\u201d and \u201clocally sourced\u201d in drive thrus are turning heads and gaining traction.<\/p>\n<p>Fast food doesn\u2019t have to mean that whatever\u00a0<em>mystery-sandwich<\/em>\u00a0you are consuming is soaked in corn oil.
